Agra and the Taj Mahal: Making the Most of Your Visit

Let us talk about the Taj Mahal. Yes, it is as beautiful as every photo you have ever seen. But seeing it in person is a completely different experience. I arrived in Agra by train early in the morning and went straight to the Taj. I had heard horror stories about crowds, so I wanted to be there when the gates opened. Walking through the main archway and seeing the white marble mausoleum appear in the distance, perfectly framed, took my breath away. For a moment, I forgot about the touts and the noise and just stood there. I spent about three hours inside, just walking around, sitting on the gardens, and watching the light change on the marble. The inlay work with precious stones is so intricate you could spend hours examining it. After the Taj, I visited Agra Fort, which is a massive red sandstone fortress that offers great views of the Taj from a distance. It is also less crowded and gives you a sense of the Mughal empire's power. My advice is to book your Taj Mahal ticket online in advance to skip the ticket line. Also, be prepared for touts. Everyone will try to sell you something or offer to be your guide. A polite but firm no thank you usually works. And do not forget to visit the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the Baby Taj. It is smaller but equally beautiful and much quieter.
