Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): The Heart of the MCU
Captain America: The First Avenger is a period superhero film that feels like a classic war movie. Director Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer) perfectly captures the World War II era, telling the story of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a scrawny kid from Brooklyn with an unbreakable spirit who becomes a super-soldier. Evans embodies Cap's decency, courage, and unwavering moral compass—qualities that would define the MCU's moral center. The film's first act, showing Steve's transformation, is beautifully handled. The Howling Commandos, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) enrich the narrative. The montage of Cap performing war bond tours before finally going into battle is both fun and poignant. The film ends with Cap sacrificing himself, waking up 70 years later, setting up The Avengers. The emotional weight of Steve losing everything he knew gives the character depth that pays off throughout the MCU. Captain America: The First Avenger is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. The film is also a television favorite on channels like Star Movies.
