Creative Writing: Finding Your Voice

The Writer's Craft
Many aspiring writers get stuck at the starting line, believing they need a brilliant idea before they can begin. But the secret is that writing is a process of discovery. The best way to find your voice is to simply start writing regularly, without judgment. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write whatever comes to mind. Don’t edit. Don’t censor. This practice, often called free writing, helps bypass your inner critic. Read a lot, and read widely. Pay attention to sentences you love and try to figure out why they work. Your voice isn’t something you invent; it’s something you uncover by writing consistently. It’s the unique combination of your experiences, your perspective, and your style. Give yourself permission to write badly. You can always revise a bad page; you can’t revise a blank one.
