Drishyam Movie Review
Drishyam is the gold standard of suspense thrillers in Indian cinema. Jeethu Joseph's original Malayalam film (later remade in multiple languages) tells the story of Georgekutty, a simple cable TV operator who goes to extraordinary lengths to protect his family after a terrible accident. Mohanlal delivers one of his finest performances, embodying a man of limited means but unlimited resourcefulness. The film's genius is in its simplicity—the plot is built around a single, brilliant idea about using cinema knowledge to create an airtight alibi. The second half, where Georgekutty outsmarts the police led by a determined Meera (Asha Sharath), is edge-of-the-seat cinema. The film doesn't rely on violence or jump scares; the tension comes from the intellectual cat-and-mouse game. The climax is both shocking and satisfying. Drishyam is a masterclass in screenwriting, showing how a family man's love can drive him to become a master strategist. The Hindi remake with Ajay Devgn was also excellent, but the original remains unmatched. The Malayalam original is available on Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar. For free viewing, some regional OTT platforms occasionally offer free access during festivals. Check if your cable TV provider has on-demand services that include Malayalam cinema. The Hindi version is available on Netflix and ZEE5.
