Getting Around Dubai: Metro, Taxi, and Everything Else
Dubai's transport network is better than its reputation among first-time visitors suggests, though it has real limitations that shape how the city is navigated. The Metro is the backbone — two lines, Red and Green, running from Expo City in the south through Downtown, the Marina, and up to Deira and beyond, covering all the major tourist and business areas. It is air-conditioned, clean, fast, and inexpensive. The NOL card functions like an Oyster card — load it at any station and use it across metro, bus, tram, and water bus. The Metro runs from 5am to midnight on weekdays and to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Taxis are plentiful, metered, and reasonably priced by international standards. They are pink-roofed Dubai Taxis operated by the RTA or independent companies. Uber and Careem, the regional ride-hailing equivalent, operate widely and are often faster to book at peak times. Private cars are the dominant mode of transport for residents, and traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road during rush hour is significant. The Dubai Tram runs along the Marina waterfront and connects to the Metro at two points. Water taxis — the abra on the Creek and the newer water bus routes on the Marina — offer scenic alternatives for some journeys. Car rental is straightforward and roads are in excellent condition, though parking in central areas requires planning.
