Phase 3
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017): Family, Fatherhood, and Heartbreak
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 expands on the first film's strengths while digging deeper into its characters. James Gunn returns with a story about family—both the one we're born into and the one we choose. The film explores Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) reunion with his father Ego (Kurt Russell), a living planet with sinister motives. The emotional climax, where Yondu (Michael Rooker) sacrifices himself for Peter, is one of the MCU's most poignant moments. The film's humor is even more irreverent, and the soundtrack (Awesome Mix Vol. 2) is another winner. The ensemble gets more depth—Gamora and Nebula's sisterly conflict, Rocket's self-loathing, Drax's friendship with Mantis. The visual effects are spectacular, particularly Ego's planet. The post-credits scenes (five of them!) set up future stories. Guardians Vol. 2 is a film about finding family in unexpected places. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
