Hampi: A Landscape of Ruins and Boulders

Ancient stone ruins and boulders in the Hampi landscape
Hampi Ruins
Hampi is one of those places that feels like it belongs on another planet. The landscape is a surreal mix of giant boulders piled on top of each other, palm groves, and the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire scattered everywhere you look. I spent three days there and felt like I barely scratched the surface. I rented a scooter, which is the best way to get around. The main temple complex, Virupaksha Temple, is still active, and monkeys roam freely around it. But the real magic is in the ruins beyond the main town. I cycled out to the Vittala Temple, which is famous for its stone chariot and musical pillars. When you tap the pillars, they produce musical notes. It is incredible to think about the craftsmanship. The landscape itself is a draw. I climbed up to the top of Matanga Hill for sunrise, and the view over the ruins and the boulder strewn valley was worth the early wake up. The Tungabhadra River runs through the area, and you can take a coracle, a round basket boat, across to the other side where there are more ruins and a quieter vibe. Hampi is a place that rewards exploration. Just pick a direction and start walking. You will find something interesting.
