One thing you'll notice when using Claude is that it handles sensitive or potentially harmful requests differently than some other AI tools. Understanding how and why can help you work with it more effectively, and avoid frustration when it declines something unexpected.
Claude is trained to avoid producing content that could cause real harm. This includes things like instructions for creating weapons, content that sexualizes minors, detailed how-to guides for illegal activities, and serious attempts to manipulate or deceive people. These hard limits exist for clear ethical reasons and aren't negotiable.
Beyond those clear limits, Claude exercises judgment on a spectrum. It's not a binary system where everything is either fully allowed or fully blocked. For gray areas — content that might be harmful in some contexts but legitimate in others — Claude tries to read context and intent. A nurse asking about medication overdose thresholds gets a different response than the same question from someone who's expressed suicidal ideation in the same conversation.
Claude will generally engage with difficult topics when there's a legitimate reason to. It can discuss historical atrocities, explain how misinformation spreads, describe how certain crimes are committed (in a journalistic or educational context), and engage with dark themes in fiction. The line it tries to draw is between understanding a thing and enabling a harmful version of it.
When Claude declines something, it tries to explain why and, where appropriate, suggest an alternative way to get the legitimate need met. This is different from just hitting a wall. If it misreads your intent, you can often clarify and get a more useful response.
Sometimes Claude is overly cautious — it refuses things it shouldn't. This is a known limitation and Anthropic is actively working on it. If you encounter a refusal that seems unreasonable for your legitimate use case, providing more context usually helps.
