Mental Health and Counseling: A Growing Need
I became a licensed clinical social worker because I wanted to help people. The need for mental health services in America has never been greater. There’s a massive shortage of therapists, counselors, and social workers. I work in a community health center, and my caseload is always full. It’s emotionally demanding work, but it’s also incredibly meaningful. You see people at their lowest and help them find their way back. The field is also expanding into telehealth, which offers more flexibility. If you have empathy and strong listening skills, and you’re willing to go through the education and licensing requirements, you’ll never be out of a job. It’s not the highest-paying field, but there are loan forgiveness programs for those who work in underserved areas. The need is urgent, and the work is vital. We need more people to step up and help heal our communities.
