Mysore: Palaces and Sandalwood
Mysore is the kind of city that feels both royal and approachable. The centerpiece is the Mysore Palace, the former seat of the Wodeyar dynasty. I visited during the day and again at night when it is lit up with thousands of lights. Both experiences are worth it. The interior of the palace is opulent, with stained glass, mirrored halls, and intricate carvings. It is one of the most impressive palaces I have seen in India. The city is also famous for its sandalwood and silk. I visited the Government Sandalwood Oil Factory, which was surprisingly interesting, and bought some sandalwood soap, which makes a nice souvenir. Mysore is also a great place to learn about yoga. There are many schools and studios in the city if you want to take a class. The food here is another highlight. Mysore dosa, a crispy rice crepe filled with a spicy potato mixture, is a local specialty. I had one for breakfast at a small restaurant and it was perfect. If you have time, take a short drive up to Chamundi Hill to the Chamundeshwari Temple. The view of the city from the top is beautiful, and the giant Nandi bull statue carved from a single boulder is impressive.
