Open Source for Beginners: How I Made My First Pull Request
Open source seemed terrifying. I thought you had to be a 10x developer to even look at a project. Then I found a project I actually used—a simple note-taking app—and noticed a typo in the documentation. I forked the repo, edited the README, and opened a pull request. It was terrifying. I expected a harsh rejection, but instead, the maintainer thanked me and merged it within an hour. I was an open source contributor! It taught me that you don’t have to rewrite the kernel to contribute. Fixing typos, improving docs, and squashing small bugs are all valid, helpful ways to start. Now, I’m hooked.
