Orchha: A Hidden Gem in Madhya Pradesh
Orchha is the kind of place you stumble upon and wonder why it is not more famous. It is a small town in Madhya Pradesh, perched on the banks of the Betwa River, and it is full of palaces and temples that feel like they have been frozen in time. I arrived in the late afternoon and walked across a bridge to the island where the main palace complex sits. The Orchha Fort complex includes the Raj Mahal and the Jahangir Mahal, both built by the Bundela rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Jahangir Mahal in particular is stunning, with its domed pavilions and intricate tile work. I climbed to the top and watched the sunset over the river and the surrounding jungle. It was magical. The next morning, I visited the Chaturbhuj Temple, which has a unique history. It was built for a deity that was never installed, so it stands empty, a massive stone structure with a single idol of Vishnu that was added later. The views from the temple are also great. Orchha is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle, which adds to its charm. It is also a great place for bird watching. I saw kingfishers and egrets along the river. If you are looking for a quiet, off the beaten path destination that is rich in history, Orchha is a perfect choice.
