Starting a Vegetable Garden in Small Spaces

A small balcony filled with terracotta pots of herbs and colorful flowers
Urban Oasis
You don’t need acres of land to grow your own food. I started my first garden on a tiny apartment balcony using pots and a few vertical planters. The secret is choosing the right plants. Herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary are incredibly forgiving and thrive in containers. For vegetables, go for compact varieties: cherry tomatoes, bush beans, and leafy greens like spinach or lettuce. The most important factor is sunlight. Make sure your spot gets at least six hours of direct sun. Water consistently, especially in pots which dry out faster. Watching that first tomato turn from green to red is a feeling you can’t buy at the store. Give it a try; your green thumb is just waiting to be discovered.
