The Buddha's Middle Way: Escaping Suffering
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, began his philosophical journey as a prince shielded from suffering. When he finally encountered sickness, old age, and death, he dedicated his life to finding a cure. His diagnosis is the Four Noble Truths: life involves suffering (*dukkha*); suffering is caused by craving and attachment; there is an end to suffering; and the path to that end is the Eightfold Path. The Buddha’s philosophy is intensely practical—it’s a therapy for the human condition. The Middle Way rejects both extreme indulgence and extreme asceticism. It’s a path of mindfulness, ethical conduct, and mental discipline. The goal isn’t a heavenly afterlife, but *nirvana*—the extinguishing of the flame of craving, leading to profound peace.
