The Complex Cleaning Stations of the Ocean
Under the sea, there are underwater ‘spas’ where small fish and shrimp set up cleaning stations. Larger fish, like groupers and even sharks, will visit these stations, hold still, and open their mouths to allow cleaner wrasses and cleaner shrimp to remove parasites, dead skin, and bacteria. It’s a mutualistic relationship: the cleaners get a meal, and the clients get a health check. What’s fascinating is the social dynamics—cleaners remember clients who are patient and will even give them preferential service. If a client cheats by eating a cleaner, the cleaner may retaliate by giving a painful bite. It’s a complex economic system based on trust.
