The Dos and Don’ts of Tipping in the USA

Tipping Etiquette
Tipping culture in America is confusing for beginners, especially if you’re from abroad. I’ve seen people get glared at for leaving nothing. Here’s the simple rule: for sit-down restaurants, tip 15-20%. For bars, a dollar per drink or 15-20% on a tab. For hotel housekeeping, leave $2-5 per night. It’s not optional; it’s how servers make their living. I know it adds up, but if you can’t afford the tip, you can’t afford the meal. It’s just part of the system here. When in doubt, 18% is a safe middle ground.
