The War That Changed the World Forever

World War II remade the planet. The old empires, Britain, France, the European colonial powers, were bankrupt and exhausted. The new superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, emerged from the war ready to dominate the second half of the century. The United Nations was created, a new hope for preventing future wars. But the Cold War began almost immediately. The alliance that defeated Hitler fractured into hostility. The war left 80 million people dead. Whole cities reduced to rubble. Millions displaced, homeless, wandering across a shattered continent. Europe had to be rebuilt. The Marshall Plan poured billions into reconstruction. Japan, defeated and occupied, transformed into a peaceful democracy. The war also accelerated social change. Women had entered the workforce and didn't want to leave. The civil rights movement gained momentum when Black soldiers returned from fighting for freedom abroad only to face segregation at home. The world after 1945 was not the world before 1939. It was something new. Something that still shapes us today.
