Thor: The Dark World (2013): The Underrated Sequel
Thor: The Dark World is often cited as the MCU's weakest entry, but it deserves reconsideration. Directed by Alan Taylor, the film pits Thor against Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), a Dark Elf seeking to plunge the universe into darkness. While the villain is forgettable, the film shines in its character moments. Tom Hiddleston's Loki steals every scene, and his dynamic with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) reaches new emotional depths. The relationship between Thor and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) gets closure, and the Asgardian funeral sequence is beautiful. The film also introduced the Reality Stone (Aether) and the post-credits scene gave us the Collector. More importantly, it set up the relationship between Thor and Loki that would pay off in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War. The final battle, with portals opening across London, is visually inventive. While not the best MCU film, Thor: The Dark World has its moments and is essential for the Infinity Saga. Thor: The Dark World is available on Disney+ Hotstar. For free viewing, many mobile plans include Disney+ subscriptions. The film is also available for rental on digital platforms. It's occasionally shown on television channels like Star Movies.
