Article 1 of the Indian Constitution – India that is Bharat shall be a Union of States
Article 1 of the Constitution of India – Union of States Explanation
Article 1 is the very first article of the Constitution of India and it defines the identity and structure of the country. It clearly states that “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.” This sentence is very important because it officially recognizes two names of the country: India and Bharat.

The phrase “Union of States” means that India is made up of different states that are united under a single central government. Unlike some other countries that formed by states joining together with the right to separate, the Indian Union is considered permanent. States do not have the right to secede from the union.

Article 1 has three main clauses. The first clause declares the name of the country and its nature as a Union of States. The second clause explains that the states and territories of India are those listed in the First Schedule of the Constitution. The third clause mentions that the territory of India includes the territories of states, union territories, and any other territories that may be acquired in the future.

This article is important because it establishes the geographical and political identity of the country. It also gives the Parliament the power to reorganize states and change boundaries when needed.

Over time, the map of India has changed several times through constitutional amendments and state reorganization. For example, new states like Telangana were created and boundaries of states were modified. All these changes are possible because the Constitution allows Parliament to make such decisions.

Article 1 is therefore considered the foundation of India’s territorial structure. It defines what India is and how the country is organized politically. Understanding this article helps citizens understand the unity and diversity of the nation.
