Exploring the Desert Southwest: A Beginner’s Safety Guide

Desert Exploration
The desert is beautiful, but it wants to kill you if you aren't careful. I learned this in Arizona when my car overheated on a remote road. I had water, thankfully, but many people don’t. The rule is simple: carry more water than you think you need. A gallon per person per day is the standard. Also, tell someone where you’re going. Cell service is spotty in places like Joshua Tree or Big Bend. And don’t hike in the afternoon heat. Get up at dawn, do your exploring, and relax by the pool (if you have one) from noon to 4 PM. The desert is a place for early birds.
