Introduction to Meditation for Skeptics
If you think meditation is about emptying your mind, you’re not alone, but that’s a common misconception. I was skeptical for years until I realized it’s simply about training your attention. Start with just two minutes a day. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on the sensation of your breath. Your mind will wander. That’s not failure; it’s the practice. When you notice you’re thinking about your grocery list, gently bring your attention back to your breath. That’s the mental rep. Doing this for a few minutes daily builds your focus muscle over time. There’s no special cushion or incense required. I often meditate in my office chair or on the couch. Give it a week of two-minute sessions. You might find it’s the most calming part of your day.
