Philosophy of Mind: The Hard Problem of Consciousness
One of the most perplexing questions in philosophy today is the problem of consciousness. Philosopher David Chalmers famously distinguished between the "easy problems" (explaining brain functions like memory or attention) and the "hard problem" (explaining why we have subjective, qualitative experiences—*what it feels like* to see red or taste chocolate). This is the problem of *qualia*. Materialists argue that consciousness is just a physical process in the brain. Dualists argue that the mind is a separate substance. Others, like panpsychists, argue that consciousness is a fundamental feature of the universe. The philosophy of mind is where science meets metaphysics. It’s a field that forces us to confront the most intimate of mysteries: what is the relationship between the three pounds of jelly in our skull and the rich, vibrant experience of being alive?
