Spinoza's God: Nature as Divinity
Baruch Spinoza was so radical in his time that he was excommunicated from his own Jewish community. His crime? Identifying God with Nature. For Spinoza, there is no transcendent creator who sits outside the universe and judges it. God *is* the universe—the infinite, necessary, and singular substance that encompasses everything. This pantheistic view leads to a unique kind of peace. If everything that happens follows from the immutable laws of nature (which are God’s nature), then there’s no point in lamenting events or praying for exceptions. The path to happiness is to understand this necessity and to live in acceptance, cultivating an intellectual love of God—a serene, rational understanding of the natural order. It’s a philosophy for those who find awe not in miracles, but in the cosmos itself.
