Respecting Nature: Leave No Trace Principles for Beginners
When I first started hiking, I didn’t think about where I stepped or what I left behind. But as I visited more beautiful places, I realized we have to protect them. The “Leave No Trace” principles are simple: pack out everything you pack in, stay on the trail, and don’t feed wildlife. I once saw a deer at a campsite in the Smokies that was used to people—it was sad, not cute. Also, if you’re in bear country, carry bear spray and know how to use it. It’s not for bears; it’s for keeping them wild. We are guests in their home.
