Navigating Public Transportation in Major US Cities

A busy subway platform in a city with people waiting for the train
City Transit Life
Coming from a small town, the first time I tried the New York subway, I felt like I was in a video game—and I was losing. Public transit in America varies wildly. New York and Chicago have great 24-hour systems. Boston’s T is old but charming. But in cities like Los Angeles or Austin? You really need a car. My advice for beginners is to download the local transit app before you arrive. Also, don’t be afraid to look lost. Locals are usually helpful if you ask nicely. And for the love of all that is holy, stand to the right on the escalator if you aren’t walking. That’s the unofficial rule in every city.
